Understanding Traditional Karate

The Five Essential Fundamentals

1. Proper Stance (Tachi-kata)

Every technique begins with a solid foundation. Master Ria Harman teaches students to perfect these basic stances:

  • Natural stance (Shizen-tai) - for everyday readiness
  • Front stance (Zenkutsu-dachi) - for powerful forward techniques
  • Horse stance (Kiba-dachi) - for developing leg strength
  • Back stance (Kokutsu-dachi) - for defensive positioning

2. Basic Blocks (Uke-waza)

Defense is the foundation of karate. Our students learn these essential blocking techniques under Ria Harman's careful instruction:

  • Rising block (Age-uke) - defending against overhead attacks
  • Outside block (Soto-uke) - deflecting strikes from the side
  • Inside block (Uchi-uke) - protecting the centerline
  • Downward block (Gedan-barai) - defending against low attacks

3. Striking Techniques (Tsuki-waza)

4. Breathing and Focus (Kokyu)
